Warm Spring Weather and Pre-emergence Herbicide Applications
By Zac Reicher, UNL Turfgrass Specialist

Image of fertilizer spreader(March 23, 2012) Warm weather is continuing and average soil temperatures at four inches are 8 to 22 degrees F higher than normal across Nebraska. The extended forecast indicates soil temperatures will likely stay constant or perhaps even warm-up, but probably not retreat in the next 10 days.  Check your local soil temperature.

With our warm winter, questions are arising about crabgrass germination and application timing of preemergence herbicides. Most homeownwers have two choices.  More...

Stay up to date! Turf iNfo will be updated frequently throughout the growing season. To sign up for automatic Turf iNfo updates email turf@unl.edu. Provide your first name, last name and email address with "ADD" in the subject line.

Honeylocust Tree ImageThree Things Not To Do When Pruning Trees
By Kelly Feehan, UNL Extension Educator

(February 2012)  One of the best times to prune shade trees is February through March; if and when they need pruning. Here are three things not to do when pruning shade trees.

  • Do not be in too big of a hurry to remove the lowest branches on young trees.
  • Do not thin out large branches in shade trees to try and reduce the crowns weight.
  • Do not top trees.

Healthy, Sustainable & Diverse Landscapes

By promoting plants adapted to Nebraska's climate extremes, emphasizing the importance of landscape diversity to minimize the impact of insect and disease problems, teaching water-wise landscape practices, and increasing the quality, productivity and safety of home food production, UNL Extension strives to improve the quality of life for all Nebraskans.  Resources include:

  • Backyard Farmer, televised since 1953.  A great resource for both home gardeners and industry professionals.
  • Urban Agriculture is a resource for vegetable and fruit growers.
  • UNL's Master Gardener program trains volunteers, who extend the reach of Extension through their work with youth, community gardens and the general public.
  • The unique needs of acreage owners is addressed through Acreage Insights.

Water Quantity and Quality

Extension educational programs can help you efficiently manage water resources. An extensive water website is dedicated to this issue. Know how to safely manage potential contaminants to protect water quality and learn how to conserve water with implementation of new irrigation technologies, increased efficiency of current water use, and adoption of cropping systems more tolerant of drought or limited water conditions. The High Plains Regional Climate Center has information on soil moisture status, evapotranspiration, and much more. Another resource is the National Drought Mitigation Center.

Pest Management

Use our educational programs to know more about integrated pest management (IPM), recycling agricultural pesticide containers, and proper pesticide handling, storage and application techniques. Some resources are:

Environmental Management for Wildlife and Plant Diversity

Our educational programs encourage locally based partnerships and application of research-based information for addressing issues related to management of eco-systems to sustain diversity of animal and plant species. Some resources are:

Home Energy

The Nebraska Home Energy web site provides research-based and best practices information to help you efficiently manage your energy and resource use at home. UNL Extension is committed to helping you know more about creating resource and energy efficient homes and adopting products and practices that reduce energy use. These strategies lead to lowering or stabilizing household energy costs and wise use of natural resources. We all benefit by reducing contributions to green house gases, lowering the demand for oil imports, and extending the availability of non-renewable resources.

Energy - Renewable Alternatives

UNL Extension targets bioenergy opportunities for Nebraska, utilization of feed co-products from ethanol production, and sustainable cropping systems to supply a bio-energy industry. Other renewable energy alternatives include wind and solar energy. In addition, home energy resources can help consumers save energy and make an impact on their monthly bills as well as the long term environmental footprint. Resources include:
